The Interior

Unfulfilled in the high-tech world, Jesse McLaren jumps at the chance to join a survey team traveling deep into the interior of the Amazon. But like Alice going down the rabbit hole, the journey challenges all her assumptions about life; and her western sensibilities clash with the native crew’s inscrutable customs and belief in macumba. Under shadowy circumstances, Jesse is put off the boat one night at an Indian village. She meets Daniel O’Brien, a former priest, now Indian agent, who agrees to guide her back to civilization. On the trek, they must flee a deranged priest and his armed followers, and Daniel is knocked unconscious. Deep forest Indians find them and carry Daniel to their chief, the only one of their tribe who has come in contact with the outside world. He tells Jesse that Daniel is on a spirit journey and speaks to her in riddles she can’t unravel. It’s only when Daniel wakes and must confront the renegade priest in a life and death struggle that Jesse sees at last into deeper mysteries of the human heart.
